Haikuthon July 1-31, 2009 by `jade-pandora:iconjade-pandora:

1 tanka

the hope of
summer rain vanishes
leaving
a neighbor's dog
to water the roses

2 haiku

heat wave chasing
all the birds and the blues
from the sky

3 tanka

a cloud of gnats
follows
a child's sno-cone
through
the petting zoo

4 haiku/senryu

old mission archway
black birds napping
in ascending order

5 tanka

lunch at the beach,
businessmen strip
and wade into
childhood

6 haiku

looking out to sea
the sky  walks  a fine line

7 haiku renga

air ballet
on the breakwater...
fishermen and gulls

under the pier
bait in a plastic pail
holding their breath

8 haiku/senryu

still seeking shade,
mating crabs in the shallows

9 haiku

the tang of sea air,
rot of a morning's catch
in my nostrils

10 tanka

old seadog
with his mutt
scans the boardwalk
for smokes
at crack of dawn

11 haiku/senryu

minefield-
jellyfish in the
seaweed washing ashore

12 senryu

beyond the breakers,
shaved heads
and a buoy bobbing

13 haiku

evening star
white-finned boats
sailing into dusk

14 senryu

man-in-the-moon,
revelers of two
at the bonfire

15 tanka

thousands
of silver slivers as
moonlight
erupts from the sand-
the grunion run!

16 haiku

drowning
harbor seals barking
roar of high tide

17 haiku renga

porpoise
sounding offshore
siren song

incoming wave
beached dinghy listing
lullaby

18 tanka

the first day-
he carves their initials
into a piling
while
blue mussels hold fast

19 haiku renga

straw hats & sunscreen
digging
for sand crabs

low tide
bones of driftwood
a jogger    leaps!

20 tanka

marshland inlet-
peregrins circle over
empty
black skimmer nests

21 tanka rensaku

children play
under the lifeguard tower
and mistake
the sleeping dog
for kelp

two lifeguards
toss
a lime-green frisbee
while the dog bites
at sand fleas

22 haiku renga

gulls riding updrafts-
the old carnival
tent flap

coming to rest
at tide line
a half-eaten corndog

23 tanka

after
the dune buggy race,
a turtle
emerges
from the tire tracks

24 tanka

in the smoldering
wreck
of a beach bungalow,
I find
a crystal door knob

25 haiku

new moon at twilight
stars raining
into the sea

26 senryu

beyond the reef
scattered ashes
his son's trip to Peru

27 haiku

rainless clouds
white-masted thunder
from the east

28 tanka

before dawn
seasick tourists
below deck,
the day boat bound for
Catalina

29 tanka

bristling with tackle,
the offshore barge...
two boys fish
bare-handed
from the bait tank

30 senryu

a bi-plane's banner
reading backwards
on the sunbathers

31 haiku

sandpipers chasing
the receding gold of day

Author's Comments

It's Haikuthon all month long, with the three Japanese muses: haiku, senryu, and tanka, with all three appearing in this collection as the month progresses, posting more than one day at times due to real life & hospital visits.

This event is being hosted by `Iscariot-Priest, so if you'd like to join in, or follow along, click here: [link] and check out the amazing array of other haijin, established & new, who are participating.

Special thanks to our `RetroZombie, for his wonderful stamp (seen as the preview piece) for the event, and he let me help!

Daily Deviation

Given 2009-07-12

Haikuthon July 1-31, 2009 by `jade-pandora contains a very visual and often breathtaking mix of Haiku, Senryu, and Tanka -- all written for the Haikuthon this month. Another great mix is sure to come for the latter half of July from this deviant. (Featured by ^fllnthblnk)

The first one is so clever! :giggle:

I love the soft alliteration in the second piece.

I look forward to reading more from you, Jade! Keep up the awesome work!

My favorite has to be the first. Not that there is anything wrong with any of the others, it's just that the idea amuses me so much that I keep coming back to that one. The idea that something generally seen as dirty is the source of something that is [over]used as a metaphor for beauty is particularly inspired. I can't wait to see more!
:iconjade-pandora:
Thank you so much, sweet one! I got off to a late start like I've suggested in my author's notes - hospital visits. :blushes:

But I'm so glad to see you here first with comments. Did you notice there's two more up? :giggle:

Thank you so much, Scott :thanks: I'm glad you're enjoying my tiny little collection - did you see that I've since added two more? I am looking forward to seeing yours as well. I'm a bit slow starting the event as events in my life have been creating havoc - but the poet in me will out!

--
:iconmahi-fish:
I've seen four total. :) Like I said, there is nothing wrong with any of the others, the first just makes such a strong impression on me that it kind of takes over. :)
:iconjade-pandora:
Ah it's all sweet music to me. :) Btw, I'll be catching up on your other lovely comments to my poetry as soon as I can - you've just overwhelmed me, that's all! :faint:

--
:iconpixieplay:
Aww, that's totally fine! :D

Yes!! I love them both as well! I particularly love the third because I love petting zoos; I was actually supposed to go to one yesterday, but I was sleep-deprived and ended up falling asleep around the time I was going to be picked up. :giggle:
:iconjade-pandora:
:giggle: ah yes I'll be sleep-deprived come later today, but I don't even care. I'm excited right now to finally get things off the ground. I'm so looking forward to seeing yours, dear girl!

No worries at all my friend. You might find my haikuathon pieces to be a bit strange. They are all very playful with puns and other wordplay. I think this might be a subconscious thing because my last two long poems have both been a bit dark and with more gravity than I typically use. Who knows. I hope they work for you. :D (And above all, I hope that you are well.)
:iconjade-pandora:
I've had some strange days of late, but that's why right now I should be sleeping but I'm elated to be here while you come in and enjoy my humble pieces to what I feel will be a wonderful event during a crazy month!

I can't wait to take in the beginning of your collection, my friend - and don't worry about being playful or irreverent - just see how my collection has started, and will continue! So no worries I say to you, you follow the way you want to go - there's no right or wrong when it comes to the modern haijin. Follow the principles basically, and then forget the rest - just enjoy doing it!
