Yesterday, fried ham and bacon served twice.
But today, no Lord, it's in your hands—
ain't nothin’ shaken on this plate, just the baby grand.
I get tipsy when bread dough’s risin’, like my love.
Good God, I can’t help myself, like my love.
Straight from the stove,
butter meltin’ on slabs o’ warm bread.
I say, I get tipsy when the yeast goes to my head.
Sweet Jesus, I can’t hear you,
you know what I’m talkin’ about.
Soon as the weather breaks tonight,
she's goin’ out, she won’t be stayin’ in.
She’ll smell BBQ from the chicken shack
near the red lights 'cross town.
But this sinner don’t care what she wears
or doesn't cook, and I'll beg
as the darkness swallows her from my sight.
I was listening to some prime blues on my headphones last night and suddenly got the urge to write some "song lyrics" like I'd written a blues song myself. The rough draft has since gone through numerous tweaks. Still, I enjoyed putting this together even though I've never written a piece in this style, but blues has been running through me ever since I can remember listening to music. If you want to hear the music that inspired me, click on the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWwUQ6… - Robert William Gary Moore (4 April 1952 – 6 February 2011), was a Northern Irish musician, most widely recognised as a singer and guitarist.)

01/05/14: A Daily Deviation, what a lovely way to start the new year! My thanks to GrimFace242 for faving and featuring my lyrical blues poem!
It is amazing. Very simple yet brilliant imagery, and I honestly can hear it sung. With a deep bluesy voice, a piano, maybe some drums, and a depressing sounding sax.
omgosh thank you SO much, Jen - my Daily D sister!
And thank you so much for honoring my poem with a FAVE!
Hi Will - wow, thank you - I'm glad to see you here, stranger! Your appreciation & enjoyment of anything I write is always a treat for me from an accomplished fellow word crafter.
Thanks so much for the fave.... Happy New Year!
Aww thank you so much, sweetie, I'm grateful for your appreciation!
And thank you for faving the poem!
Have a nice day!
Thank you so much, Cristina
and look at that little face on your new avatar - how sweet!
Jeepers, thanks so much Shane - I'm not used to seeing you up so late, but I'm glad you were able to stop by. Your visit, comment, and reason for both come as a total surprise. I had no idea this poem would ever receive such a feature!
(p.s. Did you check out the youtube link from my author's comment?)
Happy New Year, btw. :3
And it's funny you should mention Kerouac because I have a poem I wrote over this past week (I keep tweaking bits of it because as each day passes, it reads differently to me), and I deliberately let the flavor of some of his style become infused into the piece. I also spent most of this Sunday (now passed by 8 minutes) debating whether to post it at all. Your comment has given me pause to possibly change my mind. If I do post it, however, I need to tweak it once more, and then we'll see.
Oh hey, I didn't take anything you said as negative - I was glad to get your comment and your thoughts, and your appreciation. :3
I thought I'd clarify that at this time when, to my surprise & delight, this very poem as garnered a Daily Deviation - so I'm kind of celebrating.
