I saw a young man today;
a photo of him kneeling
and draped in a flag

I found him online
and was struck by how
he looks like David

an uncle I never knew
but wish I could have-
to tell him I love him

intrigued with his looks
and how he reminds me
of me - a throwback;

dropped stitches in a quilt
the two of us,
mismatched of the family-

we don't look familiar
except to each other,
related by proxy

the first time I saw
his image, my bird voice
chirped, "He was so nice!"

how did I know?
with his black & white grin-
the pieces within me

kindred spirits throughout,
separated by generations
and bonded with scout pledges

I've always missed him
because I know him, but
he couldn't wait that long-

something went very wrong
long before I was born,
too late when time would sag

overturning his world,
the Pawtucket kid in a jeep
getting the news flash

it was ending- that they'd
be sending him home, covered
in a freshly draped flag
The poem is about an uncle of mine who was killed in a freak accident in France at the end of WWll just before going back home to Rhode Island, and was inspired by this photo [link]

05/25/09: I'm terribly honored by Amber's feature of my poem in her journal - [link]

04/03/10: My mind went instantly reeling into writing this piece once I saw the image that I've posted the link to here in my author's comments. The piece is about an actual relative of mine, and the connection is deeply felt by me, especially because of how he met his fate during WWII. I would like to have your thoughts on how this bond comes across to you in the way I've expressed it. Your comments are greatly appreciated, thank you.

This is quite different from your style, but it's lovely nonetheless. The words feel more personal, more...free, in a way. More natural, less refined.

The bond comes across exactly as you explain it. It really is a beautiful piece. :)

I've often said to others when it comes up - "I never knew I even had a style."

But yes, whenever I've written about things from my past, my childhood, feeling wistful as I go sentimental - I am indeed freer in my expressions.

Thank you so much for your input, dear one.

Yes, I know what you mean. Sometimes people mention that to me too.. but I guess we do have one, as unconscious as it may be.

 My pleasure!
